• Once all the coats have dried, apply a clear topcoat to protect your new French manicure. To lengthen the manicure�s lifespan, make an effort to paint a clear coat on each night. Be sure it has ample time to dry completely.
• If you are feeling especially creative and ambitious, kick off your shoes and match your tootsies to your fingertips!

This procedure is best performed on a lazy morning or evening when no other pressing errands or tasks will get in the way. After painting your nails, avoid doing things with your hands while they dry.

For an easier painting technique, check the beauty section of a drug store or superstore for a French manicure kit. The set should contain, at the very least, nail polish in white and pink or beige and a clear topcoat. Have you ever wondered what your nails should look like? Just like clothes, different nails will suit different people. The current style of black and short does not look good on everyone, and it's okay to go back to the classics. Pinks, whites, shiny, colorful... there are many possibilities. But the most important thing is to keep your nails clean and even.

Step:

1. Don't bite or pick! The first step to having beautiful, strong nails, is to be certain you keep your nails out of your mouth. Nail biting of course destroys any possibility of having those nails you so desire! However, even if you don't bite your nails, placing your fingernails in contact with saliva weakens the nail. This is because saliva is the first step in digestion and aids the initial breakdown of food. Fingernails are a hard protein substance, but they are not impervious to the caustic nature of saliva.

   Be patient as you let your nails grow. Understand that growing your own nails to be beautiful, strong and the envy of every female who sees them, takes time. If you are looking for a quick or immediate fix for your nails, consider acrylic nails. Although, fake nails can actually damage your real nails underneath. Your nails aren't used to how heavy fake nails are, so it causes them to break down. It also pulls at your nails which damages the nails bed quite a bit. Once you begin growing your own nails, it can take upwards of 6 months to get your nails where you want them, depending on how long you want your nails to be.

   Wash your hands in warm soapy water. Make sure your nails are clean by soaking them in hot water for 30 seconds. Dry them off carefully to ensure your hands are dry as you begin the process of getting your nails in shape.

   Remove polish using a soft cotton ball. Dribble a small amount of fingernail polish remover. If you polish your nails, use as many cotton balls as you need to fully remove all nail polish. If you have a spot that's difficult to reach with a cotton ball, get your cuticle stick and pinch off a small piece of cotton, then wrap it around the flat end of the cuticle stick. Dip it in the polish remover and now you can get into those most troublesome places. Even if you don't have polish on your nails now, wiping the nail with polish remover will remove any trace of moisture left from washing your hands, as well as any soap residue that may be lingering.

   Use a small nail brush to take away any debris that may linger behind. Scrutinize the state of your nails. With the polish now gone, you can see any dirt that has accumulated under your nails. Use a good fingernail brush to wash away the dirt under the nails. Again, if you have a spot that is being stubborn, gently use your cuticle stick to carefully get the hard to reach areas. Again, dry your hand thoroughly and wipe each nail with nail polish remover to help remove water and soap residue.

   Trim your nails evenly. You should cut your finger nails by following the natural curve of your fingers. Round tips look better on most people rather than square, as a round tip makes the hand look softer and more delicate. For your toenails, you should always cut them straight across. It is healthier because it prevents painful ingrown toenails, and works best for painting them. It's important to trim the nails to prepare them to be filed.

   Use a fingernail file that is not coarse. Like sandpaper for furniture, there are different grits of nail files for different purposes. With natural nails, you want a fine grit file. Gently move the file along the edge of the nail, moving in one direction only to prevent splitting and cracking. Carry nail files with you in your purse, in a desk at work, in your car...have them everywhere! Until you get all of your nails to the point where you are working with unbroken nails, keep all nails the same length so that all of your nails are at the starting gate simultaneously and then are allowed to start actually growing. Be sure to remove any dust particles generated by the filing.

   Apply a clear thin coat of nail hardener. There are a number of companies with excellent nail products. These products will greatly increase your chance of successfully growing nails. If you tend to have paper-thin nails, there are nail hardeners that have fibers in the liquid which help tremendously.

   Do only one hand at a time. Steady your hands. This way no polish gets on your skin, if it does use remover to wash it off. It's actually pretty easy to keep only one finger protected from movement. And, even if you do have an accident, you have only ruined one nail, not all.
